You feel confident about your work but you wonder why you are not getting any raise or promotion? Sometimes, all you need to do is ask.
Asking for a raise can be intimidating but is a very natural part of having a job and it could be done in a short 5 minutes conversation. You could be missing out on earning more if you avoid asking for it out of discomfort. You might not want to risk ruining a good relationship with your manager or salon but it’s important to ask for what you deserve.
So here we share our tips to help you with your conversation with your manager.
Don’t forget that it’s normal to ask
It’s completely normal to ask for a raise and a part of the natural process of working for someone else. Most probably your manager has worked with many other beauty therapists before and has experience managing people so she should be familiar with the process as well.
If even at first your manager doesn’t accept your request and say yes, it won’t have a negative effect on your relationship as long as you ask for a reasonable amount and you have shown that you are an asset to the salon and you are doing great at your job.
Know that a raise is a way for employers to keep you in their team by paying fair market value for your work. They also know if you don’t feel like you’re not paid for what you’re worth, you will want to work in a different salon.
When is the best time to ask for a raise?
Try to be aware of your timing to ask for a raise and be emotionally intelligent about it. It’s not wise to ask for a raise when your manager is having a bad day or you know that the business hasn’t been good recently.
A good time to ask for a raise would be when your manager is in a good mood as it will affect your conversation and she will be more likely to accept your request. Also if you have been doing very well at the job and received a couple of praises from your clients and if your manager seems to be pleased with your work it could be particularly a great time to have the talk.
Generally, if you’ve been working at the same salon for over a year and doing a great at your job, it’s only reasonable to revisit your pay and have a conversation about it with your manager. But if you had a salary increase in the last 12 months, it’s not realistic to expect for another one before you complete another year. In most cases, you should wait a year from the last time your salary was changed before asking for a raise.
What to say when asking for a raise?
You don’t need a detailed explanation or a long meeting to make your request as most of the time it should be fairly brief. If you have a specific rate in your mind you can say it during the conversation, but it’s better to wait to be asked for this question.
It’s also important to do your research on the market and talk to your beauty therapist friends to see what is the scale you should be expecting for your experience and skills. Find out what are the rates for your salon’s area and see if you are unpaid. It will also look professional that you prepared for this conversation. Your fellow beauticians can also help with you with their previous experiences on what to ask, so don’t be afraid to ask as they probably have been in the same situation before.
If you don’t get a definite answer and if your manager says that she will get back to you, that’s completely normal! Many managers won’t say yes to a raise request right away. Make sure you’re clear on when to expect feedback and you can always follow up with your manager later on that conversation.
